Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Support is available 7 days per week:
General:
Where do I set alerts and sounds for email?
Alerts Tab [Middle Tab] -> Email Alerts: Click on Default Alert ['Bell Chime']. To add a new alert, press '+' in the title bar.
How do I stop eNotify playing a sound for every email that arrives?
Alerts Tab [Middle Tab] -> Email Alerts: Click on Default Alert ['Bell Chime'] -> Change 'Enabled' to 'Disabled'
Where are user added sounds stored?
It depends on the device and its capabilities. They are stored on external storage, typically an SD Card in a directory named:
Android/data/com.hermes.enotify/files/UserSounds
What sound formats are supported for user added sounds?
http://developer.android.com/guide/appendix/media-formats.html
Why is the sound I added not working?
Please ensure that the format is supported. If the imported sound file changed names after the import completed, it will not work. It may be that the file explorer is not compatible with eNotify. Copy the sound files directly into the "UserSounds" directory on external storage.
Why are profiles useful?
Typical uses of profiles: different alert scheme for home and work OR everyday life and holiday OR weekdays and weekends
Does eNotify have a guide that explains the settings?
http://ewhizmobile.com/porfolio/e_notify/help.html
I am getting multiple alerts for every new email. How do I make it stop?
This happens when alerts have been left on in the mail application.
I am getting multiple alerts for every new email from eNotify including 2 entries for each email in the history tab
1. Upgrade to the latest version of eNotify 2. Restart the device if the problem persists
I want the popup alert swiper to close after opening a message
Settings -> [Notification section] Personalize -> [Popup Section] Close after Notification Action: 'ON'
I selected a text to speech alert, but nothing plays
On the "select sound" screen, you should hear a test message when you tap "Text to Speech" as your option. If you do not hear anything, first check the notification volume in your settings. Failing that, it could happen that Text to Speech is not setup on your device. For example on the HTC Desire: Options -> "Voice input & output" -> "Text-to-speech settings" -> Engines -> Pico TTS. This screen displays a list of available languages to install. Please install the language that you require. Upon completion, you can do: Options -> "Voice input & output" -> "Text-to-speech settings" -> "Listen to an example" to verify that everything is setup correctly.
Why does it always say John Smith on the text to speech screen?
John Smith is only an example. When a message arrives, the name of the sender will be read.
Why does my alert not repeat?
eNotify cancels all outstanding repeating alerts whenever you interact with eNotify in *any* way {Touch status bar notification, Popup Notification, Android Wear Notification, Open the app, ...}
How can I turn off the email popup?
It can be turned off for 2 hours in the lite version. In the full version, it can be turned off permanently. Additionally, you can block the popup on a per app basis by configuring the 'Popup Blocker' settings.
Help I'm not getting any notifications
Things to try: 1. Enabled: ON 2. Watch Only: OFF 3. Default Alert: Enabled 4. Device default profile not on silent 5. Ensure volume is turned up fully. Do not disturb: OFF 7. View Logs -> Tells you the reason why an alert does not fire
I only want alerts for certain senders
1. Set the default alert to 'Disabled' 2. Create an alert for each sender [See video in the guide]
What's the difference between the lite and full versions?
Not much. We do not disable any real features in the lite version. So you can use the entire app for free more or less. But there are 4 good reasons to upgrade - Reliability: Upgrades, once tested are first rolled out to Lite users. We do this to minimize the possibility of regression defects or disruptions to fully paid users. While we endeavour to provide a top class service to all users, the reliability of the full/paid version is superior to that of the lite. - Advertisements: Apart from being an annoyance, the full version uses noticeably less battery and data because it does not serve advertisements. You might be surprised to learn that the Google Ad Mob ads use more resources than syncing your email account every minute due to the screen refreshes they cause. - Poup-up: In the lite version, you can only turn the pop-up email notification off for 2 hours at a time. This is so that ads can eventually be shown to subsidize the cost of development. - Support: We greatly appreciate your purchases. The app doesn't earn a great deal beyond what's needed for various smartwatches. I've purchased half a dozen watches to support this project and will soon need more. I've put about 6 man months of my time into eNotify. But the real reward is interacting with our users at the support address. I always appreciate your problem reports, feature requests and of course encouragement.
Mail:
I'm getting a message like 'authentication failed'
Ensure that your user name and password are correct. The password has the correct capitalization
My username and password are correct, but I still get authentication failed, what's wrong?
On some mail servers, you must enter the full email address as the username, example] username: john.smith@yoonka.com
Cannot login to GMail
Create an eNotify specific password or turn off 2 step verification in your GMail settings: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/1173270?hl=en
Why are my email notifications sometimes delayed?
There are many reasons this can happen: - Delays are likely to happen if you are actively using your desktop email client. Why? 2 reasons. 1. eNotify only issues notifications for UNREAD email. Once an email is opened the READ flag is set on the server causing eNotify to ignore it. 2. eNotify only issues a notification if the inbox count has changed since the last sync. For example, if you delete an email from your desktop client and receive a new one, the new email will be ignored until the count changes again. While not 'correct', it leads to enormous battery and data savings. - Delays are likely to happen if the device has recently lost its internet connection. Furthermore, if the connection gets lost frequently the app may wait up to 5 minutes before trying again to conserve resources. - Newer Android devices are not capable of checking for mail as often as older ones. Beginning with Android 6 and 7, devices now spend as much time as possible dozing to conserve battery. While the device is dozing, apps cannot access the CPU or network. The full technical details of doze are here: https://developer.android.com/training/monitoring-device-state/doze-standby.html The upshot on doze is: - Notifications are delivered more quickly when the device is charging - If not charging, notifications are delivered more quickly when the screen is ON [The device is actively being used] - Notifications are more likely to be delayed when the device is unplugged with the screen OFF [Device is dozing] - Notifications will be delayed an average of 4.5 minutes - Notifications will be delayed up to about 9 minutes In new versions of Android, Google have designed it so that only Google Cloud Messages may wake-up a device from Doze. We do have a GCM enabled version of eNotify, however it requires a monthly fee to cover the GCM cloud server. For root users, it is possible to configure or turn-off Doze by using an application called Doze Settings Editor. The support forum for the application is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/root-doze-settings-editor-android-t3235130 The app can be downloaded from the XDA website here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3527956&d=1446439813 Ensure the Settings -> Apps -> Non market apps [Or may use the wording: "Non trusted apps"] ON For power users, we are about to begin the trial of a desktop companion app. The app will sync email on your home computer and wake-up the phone via a messaging service. It requires that you have a computer (server) that can be left on 24 hours per day. Please contact support if you are interested in participating in the trial. The advanced screen has options that can change syncing behaviour: - Option to prevent the device from dozing [We strongly advise that you never use this, it will *murder* the battery by holding a permanent lock on the CPU. Unfortunately, this is the only way to disable doze and the side effect is that it makes the device less battery efficient than early versions of Android since it prevents the device from resting at all.] - Option to always check for mail even if the count hasn't changed [Again, we highly advise against this since it will increase battery and data usage.] - Option to generate messages for UNREAD email - Option to change the retry time for IMAP idle [push mail] failures The app menu has a "Check now" command that issues an immediate sync to check for mail - There is a home screen widget that can issue a "check now" command without opening the app - "Check now" should never be necessary, but it may be something that is increasing useful as future versions of Android become increasingly disabled in favour of Google Cloud Messaging. Note: None of the advanced setting should be changed. They are only exist for extreme edge cases and validating certain behaviours. Changing these settings is highly likely to cause battery drain and other unwanted side effects.
Can Doze be disabled or configured?
Yes, but it requires a root app called "Doze Editor" that has been banned from GooglePlay Explanation of the app here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/root-doze-settings-editor-android-t3235130 The app can be downloaded from the XDA website here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3527956&d=1446439813 Ensure the Settings -> Apps -> Non market apps [Or may have the wording: "Non trusted apps"] ON
Is eNotify more secure than other apps in the email notification category?
eNotify syncs mail by connecting directly to the your mail server. All the mail processing is performed locally on your Android device. Other apps in category work by syncing your mail in an intermediate cloud computer.
I can connect to my Outlook Exchange server in the device mail app, but not through eNotify?
The mail app that comes on the device uses a protocol called Active Sync. We do not support this protocol because it is too expensive to license. For Exchange, we support EWS and IMAP. The settings including the user name may be different to what you normally use. Please check with the Exchange System administrator.
I cannot connect to my exchange server through EWS
Please Contact your exchange mail administrator. Since the EWS settings differ for every installation they are the only ones that can provide this information Tip 1: Enter the correct 'Domain' and 'Email Address', but leave the 'Service URL' blank. Now press 'Check Connection'. If the server has auto discovery enabled it will auto populate. Please be aware this may or may not be the correct service URL since some servers are not configured correctly. Tip 2: The format of the service URL should look like: 'https://mail.domain.com/EWS/Exchange'. The path structure should look very similar. Tip 3: Get your Exchange admin involved! They should be able to determine the correct service URL.
I cannot connect to my Office 365 account
Please use IMAP. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-help/settings-for-pop-and-imap-access-HA102908389.aspx
I'm getting "not trusted server certificate" when connecting with GMail
Ensure the system time and date is correct on the device
I need to be able to use my own signed certificate
Account -> [Menu] -> Advanced -> Accept All Certificates 2
Why is push mail not supported by Yahoo?
Their server only supports basic IMAP. They do not support IMAP-IDLE.
Why can I not set a port for the incoming server with account type other?
Because it is unnecessary. POP3 uses 110 or 995 and IMAP uses 143 or 993. 995 or 993 will be used when 'Use TLS' is set to ON in the account settings.
I set my Hotmail account to sync every minute, but I only get a notification approximately every 10 minutes
The POP3 server implemented by Microsoft only returns emails approximately every 10 minutes. Why? You will have to ask Microsoft. But when you use EAS (Exchange Active Sync) Microsoft's proprietary protocol emails are returned immediately. Unfortunately, the EAS protocol from Microsoft is very expensive to license so it is not an option for independent apps. UPDATE: This should no longer happen unless Microsoft is hosting your account on one of their less effective legacy systems. Microsoft is now supporting the more modern IMAP alternative for some Hotmail accounts. Please be aware that Microsoft only supports basic IMAP not IMAP-IDLE / push mail. You can enter your account as: Other -> IMAP. http://www.howto-outlook.com/howto/accountsettings.htm#outlookcom
Watches:
Does eNotify support moto 360
Yes it is an Android Wear watch
Does eNotify support Sony watch?
Yes we have native Sony support for SW & SW2. The SW3 is an Android Wear watch. We support all Android Wear watches.
Why do notifications not get delivered to my Qualcomm Toq watch?
Open the Toq watch manager app: Applets -> More Applets -> eNotify -> [Check]
The eNotify watch app is now ready to receive notifications
Can I send a notification to the watch only?
Android Wear: Yes. Normally it is not possible with Android Wear watches because the Android framework enforces a mandatory phone notification. However, eNotify uses a custom background service running on the watch to post notifications thereby avoiding the framework. SW, SW2, Pebble and Toq: Yes you can send to the watch only
What does the eNotify app on the watch do?
Nothing. Ignore it. You do not need to open or 'use' the app. It is a customized background service that receives notifications from the phone and posts them to the watch. The main purpose of the app is to facilitate watch only notifications. However, it also improves the performance of stacked [inbox-style] notifications. UPDATE: If you update eNotify, the watch app should no longer be visible.
Can I open an email directly on the phone from the watch? I'm not happy with just opening the inbox.
Yes. On the account edit page, set your email app to "ENotify Simple Viewer". Set the secondary email app to your regular app: GMail, K9 etc. Emails will be opened directly in the simple viewer. From the simpler viewer, your regular email app can be opened with the press of a button.
Why can I not get the notification back when I open the app?
Notifications remain in the stack until they are swiped away. However, once they are gone they cannot be retrieved. This is standard Android framework behaviour. Persisting the notifications requires a full email app for the wear device. eNotify is not designed to function as a full email app. It is a notification companion app designed to be used alongside full email apps like GMail or K9 for example.
I cannot find the eNotify watch app?
The Android framework requires between approximately 2 and 5 minutes to install the app. The installation process begins once the main app has been installed from GooglePlay.
Why does the wear app take so long to install?
I don't know. It is the Google framework that handles the installation.
Why cannot I not get the wear app to install?
Before you start this procedure, please ensure that you're able to receive email notifications on the phone. If the phone cannot receive notifications, the watch will not receive them either. 1. Uninstall previous app from mobile [While watch connected] 2. Restart mobile 3. Restart wear 4. Connect to wear, Disconnect from wear, Reconnect to wear: 5. Re-Sync apps in Android Wear on the mobile application a. Open wear app b. Settings Icon c. Tap on name of your watch d. Resync apps 6. Re-install app on the mobile [Wait for at least 5 minutes, but not more than 30 minutes] 7. Connect wear, Disconnect wear, Reconnect wear: 8. Re-Sync apps in Android Wear application a. Open wear app b. Settings Icon c. Tap on name of your watch d. Resync apps If it does not fix the problem, repeat the procedure with 4.5: 4.5. Reformat watch [Often fixes the problem due to a caching defect in the framework] Wear 1.4 and above a. Watch Settings b. Un-pair with phone c. Confirm factory reset
Why is no progress shown while the wear/watch app is installing?
I don't know. It is the Android framework that shows progress for app installations. It shows progress for the main app, but ignores the wear app. Note: In Android 2.0, companion apps will no longer be auto-installed by the framework. mailto:android_support@verietassoftware.com?Subject=FAQ%20Help
